Plethysmographs

Buxco offers a wide variety of plethysmographs – animal chambers used for detecting a breathing flow waveform. Buxco's chambers are a "flow" design, containing one or more pneumotachographs in the chamber wall. Most utilize Buxco's patented Halcyon low noise pneumotach design.

Choose from the following:

Unrestrained Whole Body

A very versatile design for studies on conscious unrestrained animals. Subjects are free to move, eat, and drink. Use multiple chambers simultaneously for high throughput. Ideal for long-duration, long-term, and anesthesia-free investigations. Accommodates aerosol delivery or temperature and humidity compensation. Also supports a respiratory gas analysis option. Urine collection bases are available on some models. Chambers are available for mice, mouse pups, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, dogs, and NHPs. Halcyon™ pneumotach included.

Unrestrained Whole Body with Tower

Like the unrestrained chambers above, but outfitted with a tower. The tower may be equipped with a swivel and one or two cannulas. Use this configuration for monitoring blood pressure, blood sampling, infusion, or collecting EEG data. Halcyon™ pneumotach included.

Restrained Whole Body

Similar to Unrestrained Whole Body chambers above except these smaller chambers constrain the animals to limit movement. Available for mice and rats.

Anesthetized

Use these chambers for monitoring the respiratory mechanics of anesthetized subjects, including lung resistance and dynamic compliance. Can be used for ventilated or spontaneously-breathing animals. Accommodates in-line aerosol delivery. Available for mice, rats, guinea pigs, and primates.

Pulmonary Function Testing

Chambers designed specifically for Buxco's forced maneuvers pulmonary function testing system. These chambers incorporate solenoid valves and other components for spirometry studies. Available for mice, rats, guinea pigs, dogs, and non-human primates.

Double Chamber

The double chamber plethysmograph allows researchers to independently monitor nasal and thoracic flows of conscious, restrained animals. Software analysis delivers parameters like Specific Airway Resistance, Specific Airway Conductance, and EF50. Accommodates aerosol delivery. Available for mice, rats, and guinea pigs.

Head Out

Similar to the double chamber plethysmograph except the subject's head extends through the wall of the chamber into the open air. Only thoracic movement is measured. Used for the study of basic flow derived parameters on conscious restrained animals. Available for mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and primates.

Nose Only

Like the head out chamber, the nose only chamber is used to measure thoracic flow. Designed to be used with aerosol exposure towers, these chambers provide a latex nose seal. Available for mice and rats.
